The residents of Watersville, Pontoon Road, Castlebar secured a victory in their fight to stop a relief road passing through their estate this week at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council. A large group of the residents attended the meeting in Marsh House where the elected members rejected a new inner relief road from the Pontoon Road to Rathbawn that would have passed through their estate. A motion from independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne which was seconded by Fíanna Fáil Cllr Blackie Gavin was passed which will see the proposed improvement works on New Line and Davitt’s Terrace go ahead, but the works will terminate after Davitt’s Terrace and no relief road will be built through the Watersville area. The road is now off the table for at least six months and after which time the town manager can put the proposal before the elected members again.

A delegation from Bord Gáis assured the members of Castlebar Town Council that they would do all in their power to ensure that all works carried out by and on behalf of Bord Gáis would be done to the highest standards and all damage caused by these works would be restored to the highest quality.

The introduction of parking charges at Castlebar train station caused controversy for the second month in a row at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Fine Gael Town Councillor Brendan Heneghan brought to the attention of the elected members representations he had received from a woman whose car was clamped in the car park in the past month. Cllr Heneghan told the meeting: “Last Friday a woman got the train to Dublin and when she came back with her elderly mother she found her car had been clamped. It wasn’t that she was avoiding to pay the parking fee, but rather that she didn’t know there was one. And when she got off the train there waiting for her were what I can only call goons to charge her to get the clamp off. The woman didn’t have any cash on her and had only her Laser card and had to ring her husband to bring in cash to her so she could get the clamp off.”

Castlebar Town Council withdrew part of the planning permission for McHale Park at its monthly meeting last Thursday. The meeting, which was attended by a large number of the residents of McHale Road, but not by members of the Mayo County Board, saw a motion put forward by independent councillor Frank Durcan and seconded by fellow independent councillor and Mayor of the town Michael Kilcoyne passed by six votes to three in the chamber.

Despite some members of Castlebar Town Council saying last week they wanted a massive 10 per cent cut in rates in the town for 2010, the elected members settled on the figure of a 2.5 per cent cut in the rates.
